The market traces its roots to 1779, which makes it the oldest public market in the city and the only one St. Louis runs itself. The current hall went up in 1929, designed by city architect Albert Osberg after Brunelleschi’s Foundling Hospital in Florence. More than 140 vendors work the stalls, selling produce, meat, spices, and just about everything else. It’s the anchor the rest of the neighborhood grew up around.
